Hippie Dabble Digest 13: Astronomy Picture of the Day, dragon’s tongue bean, Specialty Produce, Hudson Valley Co, and Seed Savers

The Hippie Dabble Digest started September 7, 2021 on Substack.  We have since transitioned over to the blog and a newsletter that encompasses more than just the digest.  As part of this transition,  Hippie Dabble is bringing over all the old digests for you to enjoy.  This one is week 13 from November 30, 2021.  The links from the Hippie Dabble Digests get put into the Directory and can be found here: https://hippiedabble.com/directory/.

This week’s just for fun link is from NASA. It’s the Astronomy Picture of the Day. Every day it gives you a new picture or video and explains what you are looking at. Today’s video is “In Motion: Uranus and Moons.” Tomorrow it says we’ll see “the blood moon band.” Check it out here: https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html.

Dragon’s Tongue Bean

This week I was gifted dragon’s tongue bean seeds. I’ve never heard of them so of course I looked up some information. They’re interesting looking beans that are quite nutritious. Read more about them here: https://specialtyproduce.com/produce/Dragon_Tongue_Beans_604.php.

Specialty Produce

Looking for dragon’s tongue bean information led me to a couple of different interesting websites. The Specialty Produce website has lots of information on hundreds of different types of produce. It not only includes the basic information like taste, nutrition, how to eat it, etc., but it also includes recipes, growers links, what restaurants are buying and using that specific produce, and a map of reported farmer’s market sales. Look around the Specialty Produce website at https://specialtyproduce.com/.

Hudson Valley Seed Company

Hudson Valley Seed Company is the other site I came across while looking for bean information because that’s the company that distributed these specific seeds. Their packaging features unique art related to the specific seed, and they not only sell lots of different types of seeds, but also gardening supplies, fine art, and gifts. Go to https://hudsonvalleyseed.com/ for more.

Seed Savers

My gifter also brought Seed Savers to my attention. This is a nonprofit whose mission is to “educate and connect people through collecting, regenerating, and sharing heirloom seeds, plants, and stories.” They have various resources such as a blog and recipes, programs, exhibits, and even a seed exchange. Find Seed Savers here: https://www.seedsavers.org/.

On the Website

I’m super excited to announce that the shop is slowly getting some products. Currently we have a few items from The Bead Dude, and I am also looking into suppliers for other items. (Full disclosure – The Bead Dude is my husband. You can find more of his stuff on his website at https://thebeaddude.com.) Is there anything specific you’d like to see in the shop? Leave me a comment or send me an email at HippieDabble@gmail.com.
