Hippie Dabble Digest 12: Quick, Draw!, The Minimalists, growing mushrooms on coffee grounds, the 30X30 initiative, and the Campaign for Nature

The Hippie Dabble Digest started September 7, 2021 on Substack.  We have since transitioned over to the blog and a newsletter that encompasses more than just the digest.  As part of this transition,  Hippie Dabble is bringing over all the old digests for you to enjoy.  This one is week 12 from November 23, 2021.  The links from the Hippie Dabble Digests get put into the Directory and can be found here: https://hippiedabble.com/directory/.

Welcome to week 12 of the Hippie Dabble Digest! This week’s just for fun link is like a one person win lose or draw game. It gives you an object to draw, you draw it and see if the artificial intelligence can guess what you’re trying to draw within the time limit. Check out Quick, Draw! here: https://quickdraw.withgoogle.com/.

The Minimalists

Black Friday is approaching so I thought I’d tell you about our alternative to Black Friday that we’ve been doing for the last eight years.  We call it Brown Friday, and it’s the day that we get rid of stuff.  So in the spirit of Brown Friday, this week I bring you The Minimalists.  This is a great website that brings you the what, why, and how of minimalism through a blog, podcast, films, books, and more.  Explore all they have to offer here:  https://www.theminimalists.com/.

How I Built This Podcast – Back to the Roots

Lately I’ve been super interested in mushrooms. I was delighted when this story came on a podcast that I listen to regularly. The podcast is called How I Built This and features business owners and the story of how their companies began. In this episode, two college kids began Back to the Roots (now a home gardening company) by growing mushrooms on coffee grounds in their dorm room closet and then eventually selling coffee ground grown mushrooms to Whole Foods! TED Talks – A Bold Plan to Protect 30% of the Earth’s Surface and Ocean Floor

In this short presentation (about 9 minutes), Marine ecologist Enric Sala discusses the shrinking biodiversity he has witnessed while diving in the ocean the last several decades and presents the 30×30 initiative – a plan to protect 30% of the earth’s surface and ocean floor by 2030. It’s an interesting talk and plan that can be found here:  https://www.ted.com/talks/enric_sala_a_bold_plan_to_protect_30_percent_of_the_earth_s_surface_and_ocean_floor

Campaign for Nature

National Geographic and WYSS Campaign for Nature partnered to launch the 30X30 initiative (protecting at least 30% of the planet by 2030). Find out why 30%, how they plan to do it, and how you can help by going to their website: https://www.campaignfornature.org.
