Biden Interior proposes leasing public lands for conservation (CNBC)

“The Biden administration this week proposed a new rule that would allow the Interior Department to lease public lands for conservation, a process similar to how the agency delivers leases for oil and gas development and mining projects.” Read more here: https://www.cnbc.com/2023/03/31/biden-interior-proposes-leasing-public-lands-for-conservation.html.

Lithium is becoming more crucial in a warming world, but Maine’s huge deposits may never be mined because of environmental concerns (The Boston Globe)

“Surveys conducted by Freeman and his wife, Mary, have estimated that the lithium in the massive crystals on their 5,000-acre property here could be worth more than $1.5 billion.

But none of their ore is being mined here. The state has refused to allow it, citing Maine’s strict environmental laws. The Freemans have appealed to the courts. A wave of competing bills is making its way through the Legislature — some that would allow mining to proceed, others that would ban it — fueling a debate that has pitted a clean energy future against unknown environmental impacts.” Read more here: https://www.bostonglobe.com/2023/04/01/science/lithium-is-becoming-more-crucial-warming-world-maines-huge-deposits-may-never-be-mined-because-environmental-concerns/.

This and That

This is a new section for all of the miscellaneous stuff I find.

The plastic water bottle industry is booming. Here’s why that’s a huge problem (CNN)

“The bottled water industry is a juggernaut. More than 1 million bottles of water are sold every minute around the world and the industry shows no sign of slowing down, according to a new report. Global sales of bottled water are expected to nearly double by 2030.

But the industry’s enormous global success comes at a huge environmental, climate and social cost, according to the report published Thursday by the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health, which analyzes the industry’s global impacts.” Read more here: https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/16/world/plastic-water-bottles-un-report-climate.

Plants aren’t silent. They make clicking sounds, a study finds (CNN)

“Plants make popping sounds that are undetectable to the human ear, according to recordings made in a new study — and they make more sounds when thirsty or under other kinds of stress.” Read more and listen here: https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/30/world/plants-make-sounds-scn/index.html.
